manikarnika burning ghat - varanasi (india)

Manikarnika Ghat is the largest of the Burning Ghats of Varanasi, where the dead are cremated day and night on the bank of the Ganges river.

The corpse of the dead are cremated on funeral pyres, until only ashes remain. Then, the ashes are thrown in the Ganges river. The process takes about 3 hours.

You can see some burning pyres in the back, where cremations are being done.
