hindu pilgrims bathing at the surya kund pool - yamunotri sacred hot springs (india)

Hindu Pilgrims bathing at the sacred Surya Kund hot pool in Yamunotri (India)

The hot water from the Yamunotri geothermal springs is captured near the Yamunotri temple, and it fills up several pools where pilgrims can bathe.

When I was there, the water in the pool was really too hot to bathe, so I did just like this guy: I used buckets to get a hot shower. It was so nice to enjoy this hot springs after the long walk up the mountain to reach Yamunotri.

The highlight if this trip was the Maha Kumba Mela Hindu Festival, the largest human gathering on earth, which happens once every 12 years.

Other regions visited include the springs of the Ganges river, Varanasi, the Konark sun temple.

See also my photos of Nepal that I took the same year.

The Yamuna is the largest tributary river of the Ganges. It meets the Ganges at the Sangam near Allahabad, site of the largest human gathering on Earth, the Hindu Kumbh Mela festival.

High in the Yamuna valley, Yamunotri is an important Hindu pilgrimage destination.
