mazu crew on the zulai hand art car - burning man 2016

Mazu Crew on their Zulai Hand art car.

The Mazu crew was an all-Chinese camp with amazing art and a Brazilian drum marching band.

The members of the Mazu camp were all Chinese, mostly from Taiwan, with some coming from Hong Kong and Mainland China (PRC, aka People's Republic of China).

Burning Man 2016 photos by Tristan Savatier (email me!)

This year, like the 3 previous years, I traveled to and from BM by motorbike, carrying all my gear, bicycle, tent and food needed for the week in the desert . I even managed to carry almost enough water for the whole week.

For me, the highlight of this year was the amazing performances and art of the all-Chinese Mazu crew.

I did not join the Burning Man "Documentation Team" this year, because I vastly prefer shooting the art and people that I find inspiring, rather than be assigned to shoot a particular area of Black Rock City, or performance.

Technical note: I shot my 2016 photos using only two lens, a 10-20mm wide angle lens (equiv. to 15-30mm with the crop factor), and a Tamron 17-50mm mounted on a Sony A65 (25 mega-pixel). I managed to keep the camera and lens completely protected from the dust by keeping them in a sealed zip-lock bag, with a cut hole tapped to the lens. I shot less than 1500 exposures.

Hi-resolutions photos with no watermark are available for editorial use (contact me).

The Mazu crew are a group of Taiwanese volunteers from a culture and art foundation in Taiwan called the Dream Community.

The members of this camp were all Chinese, mostly from Taiwan, with some coming from Hong Kong and Mainland China (PRC, aka People's Republic of China).

They created an art car (Zulai), a giant sculpture of Mazu, Taiwanese popular Goddess of the Empty Sea, and giant puppets also based on Taiwan folklore.

They had a very cool Brazilian-drum marching band playing Samba-Reggae during their processions, with many costumes dancers.

Burning Man is yearly gathering of about 70,000 people, many from the San Francisco Bay Area, celebrating love, life, passion and art during one week in a desolated desert in Nevada.

The event takes place each last week of august in an immense dry lakebed called Black Rock Desert. A temporary city is built where about everything is permitted except violence, money and commerce.

The culmination of the event is the burning of a large human-shape figure in a giant bonfire, hence the name (Burning Man). The city disappears completely at the end of the week, leaving no trace.
