Bear Gulch Cave is a "talus cave", formed by falling boulders and debris that got wedged in a narrow canyon, leaving a space under them.­

The dramatic landscape with red cliffs, pinnacles and caves is formed by breccias rocks, which are the geologic remnants of an extinct volcano located near the San Andreas fault.­

Several "talus caves" can be found in the park.­ Deep, narrow gorges and shear fractures were transformed into caves by large chunks of rock falling from above and wedging into the cracks leaving an open area below.­
