Bear Gulch Cave Trail in the Pinnacles National Park (California)

The trail enters a "talus cave" area. Two hikers are standing under the boulder, giving a sense of scale.

A "talus cave" is formed when falling boulders and debris get wedged in a narrow canyon, leaving a space under them.

Photos of the Pinnacles National Park (California), taken in April 2017 during 2 days of hiking on the most scenic trails of the park.

The dramatic landscape with red cliffs, pinnacles and caves is formed by breccias rocks, which are the geologic remnants of an extinct volcano located near the San Andreas fault.

Several "talus caves" can be found in the park. Deep, narrow gorges and shear fractures were transformed into caves by large chunks of rock falling from above and wedging into the cracks leaving an open area below.
