Cave 19 - Ajanta Caves (India)

This rock-cut cave is carved out from a rock cliff, so it is made of a single piece of stone. It was not built, but rather, excavated.

Ajanta Caves (India) are rock-cut cave monuments dating from the second century BC.

The caves contain paintings and sculpture considered to be masterpieces of both "Buddhist religious art" and "universal pictorial art".

Personally I was more impressed by the nearby Ellora Caves.

I though this cave pretty amazing to be carved out like a Cathedral ceiling. Many of the very old cathedrals in Europe have this type of roof sometimes carved from sandstone and othertimes made from wood. (in Holland).Too see this in India carved within a cave was quite astonishing. So many questions?
