Collapsed Crypt in Otkhta Monastery Ruin - Georgian Church (Turkey)

It does not look like this crypt has ever been excavated. I wonder if there are any treasures in there.

When i arrived in this remote ruin after driving 5 miles of a dirt road, I found a large group of Japanese scientists with a van full of telemetry, photography and video equipment. They explained that they were working for a University project and they were mapping and recording as much information as possible, images and data, about the old Georgian church ruins in the region, since they are threatened and likely to degrade and collapse, especially in this region that has occasional earthquakes.

Photos of the ruins of old Georgian Churches and Monasteries located in North-Eastern Turkey.

This region of Turkey used to be part of ancient Georgia, and those magnificent churches and Monasteries were built around the 10th century.

Turkey does very little to preserve them because most Turkish people don't have much respect for old Christian ruins.

The old monuments are now used to shelter farm animals. Most of the ruins are rapidly degrading.

One of them that still has a roof is being used as Mosque.

Some of those ruins are in isolated, hard to reach areas, sometimes far away for villages.
