manikarnika burning ghat - varanasi (india)

Manikarnika Ghat is the largest of the Burning Ghats of Varanasi, where the dead are cremated day and night on the bank of the Ganges river.­

The corpse of the dead are cremated on funeral pyres, until only ashes remain.­ Then, the ashes are thrown in the Ganges river.­ The process takes about 3 hours.­

You can see some burning pyres in the back, where cremations are being done.­
