coleoptera - carabus - procerus species - insect (bulgaria)

Coleoptera tentatively identified as Carabus (Procerus species)

It could be Procerus caucasicus (Adams, 1817), or a female Procerus gigas gigas (Creutzer,1799)

It could also be Carabus (Megodontus) caelatus schreiberi (Kraatz, 1887).

Spotted it in Bulgaria. I remember it emitted a pretty nasty scent as a defense when I grabbed it.

This photo is part of my България - Bulgaria series.

Those are the best of the 1200 photos I took during an unforgettable 3-week trip in Bulgaria in May 2004, with my friend Susie. Some photos have been digitally converted to black-and-white.

According to my opinion this specimen should be a Procerus instead of Megodontus...most probably a "caucasicus" or similar. The size is bigger than the usual Megodontus.Regards. Gabriele
